Mission Statement

The Unicode Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) is the world's largest repository of locale data—translations, date formats, plural rules, currency names, and much more—that powers global software for billions of people. CLDR Academy is a guided learning program for anyone who wants to build fluency in CLDR and contribute high-quality data through the Unicode Survey Tool.

By the end of this program, participants will understand what CLDR is, why it matters, and how to confidently contribute data that meets Unicode's standards for accuracy and consistency.

Who This Is For

  • The types of data CLDR covers (translations, date/time formats, plurals, etc.)
  • How CLDR data is used in real products (Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc.)
Why it matters

CLDR is the backbone of digital globalization. Understanding its role helps you see how a translation you provide can ripple out to millions of users.

Module 2 — Understanding Locale Data

What you'll learn
  • The concept of a locale (language + region + script)
  • Key categories in CLDR: dates, numbers, currency, units, plural rules, and more
  • How CLDR organizes data in a hierarchy (inheritance)
Why it matters

Knowing how data is structured helps you enter translations in the right place and avoid duplication or inconsistency.

What you'll learn
  • How to access and navigate the Unicode Survey Tool
  • Dashboard basics: finding missing items, errors, and provisional translations
  • How voting and vetting work
